FEW ARE FRIENDS OF WHO YOU ARE: MOST ARE FRIENDS OF WHAT YOU ARE
There are friendships that are legitimate and others that are lightweight and matter little. The former enrich your accomplishments, the latter give only fleeting pleasure. In our world today, where ambition abounds, few are friends of who you are; most are friends of what you have accomplished. The best friends are those you have tested by time. They are friends chosen not only by desire, but by judgment, rather than those who enter your company through chance and intrusion. Though choosing is exercised in its execution. To find pleasure in a man does not prove him a friend, for the enjoyment may spring more from the high value you set upon his company than from his capacity.
